Septic tank - A septic tank is part of a small scale sewage treatment system often referred to as a septic system, which consists of the tank itself and a septic drain field. Wastewater enters the tank where solids can settle and scum floats.

Septic drain field - Septic drain fields are used to remove contaminants and impurities from the liquid that emerges from the septic tank. This is typically done by burying perforated pipes in trenches and allowing the liquid to leach out and the surrounding soil absorbs the unwanted waste.

Perc test - A perc test (from the word percolation, alternatively spelled "perk test") is a test to determine the absorption rate of soil for a septic drain field or "leach field". In order to gain the permits necessary to build a house, the surrounding land must be tested to determine if the land is suitable to be built on.

Divergence - In vector calculus, the divergence is an operator that measures a vector field's tendency to originate from or converge upon a given point. For instance, for a vector field that denotes the velocity of water flowing in a draining bathtub, the divergence would have a negative value over the drain because the water vanishes there (if we only consider two dimensions); away from the drain the divergence would be zero, since there are no other sinks or sources.
